The Spatial Realm, a Book Series

Why I Wrote The Spatial Realm Book Series

The spatial realm is the name I give to all the space that surrounds us as we move through our lives on earth. For millennia, time was money. Economics revolved around the organization of time. But curiously, space has never been viewed that way.

Until now.

Space is money. Empty space is the world’s most abundant, most untapped natural resource and now that holographic telepresence has reached maturity and a plethora of smart devices exist to unfold it, we are about to experience a whole new mass medium – the spatial realm. This is a world of holographic people, products, places and data – transforming the empty spaces around us into a spatial realm.

I wrote The Spatial Realm, Moonshot for a New Mass Medium because I believe this is the biggest evolution in our lives since the emergence of the mobile internet two decades ago. First the internet, and then mobility transformed the way we live, work, travel, educate and entertain ourselves. Whereas the metaverse represents a deeper escapism into the virtual world, the spatial realm represents a return to our real environment – just enriched with holographic telepresence.

Holographic habitats involving speakers and performers, new products and innovations, venues and locations as well as data and information will transform how we experience the world around us. This is not digital transformation (that has happened or is happening already). This is cyber-physical fusion and involves a whole new engagement with our immediate surroundings. This is not just a new platform economy – this is a new form of education, culture and healthcare. Whether you are a business owner or an educator, a surgeon or a financial analyst, a retailer or a consumer, the spatial realm is a whole new field of engagement, interaction and creation.

Holograms have been around for at least seventy years in more or less tactical form. The internet has been with us for around half that time. Bring the two together and see how they revolutionize the real world. But this is not merely about single holograms, this involves episodic content which weaves continuous pathways through our life events be they commercial, educational, cultural, health-related or whatever.

My dream for The Spatial Realm is that it will inspire you to see the empty space around you differently. When you travel, to see the spaces around you differently. When you engage with data, to experience it differently. When you encounter new products, to relate differently. And when you attend public events, to transform your level of attention, engagement and enjoyment. Moonshots are what we call the great projects that reach for the stars. Science fiction is full of them, until they become science fact. A holographic realm has long been associated with our scientific fictions – today it is becoming fact.

I hope that like me you will view the internet not as a parallel universe but a platform to enrich the real world we inhabit. Spatial reality is the next frontier beyond the virtual world we have created. Its third dimension is a vital corrective to the flatscreen unreality we have escaped into. May this new vision inspire your own moonshot.

Book Summary

The Spatial Realm

Moonshot for a New Mass Medium

By Paul Duffy, Holographer

In his first book on the subject, pioneer Paul Duffy opens up the new world of spatial reality and holographic experience waiting for us beyond AR. The world has had over twenty years of virtual reality in the form of the internet and smartphones. While this has had a transformation effect on our lives – on the way we communicate, socialize, travel and consume – even the hardened digital evangelist must admit the price has been high in terms of privacy, democracy and mental health. It’s time to return ourselves to the world around us, and not escape any more into the Shangri La of the metaverse. Virtual Reality is only one strategic solution. Another is Augmented Reality, and it’s far more promising in terms of connecting to the real world which surrounds us. Augmented Reality is a process of layering digital experiences over real-world environments, and in the case of holograms, experiences which are actually in the real world itself. Paul Duffy calls this the spatial realm, and it is a powerful fusion of Augmented Reality and Artificial Intelligence to enrich and intensify our relationship with other people, products, places and even our own data sets.

Moonshots are once-in-a-lifetime ventures which transform how humans live. The nineteenth century gave us photography, cinema, the combustion engine and the telephone. The twentieth century gave us flight, radio, television, computers and the internet. Already in the third decade of a new millennium, we will move beyond the screens which have been obsessing us and begin to experience the real world as never before using immersive holograms to encounter people, products, places and even information, ideas and decisions. The Spatial Realm takes us beyond the opening gambits of AR and AI to a new realm of possibilities where not only commerce but education and healthcare are revolutionized. The previous breakthrough innovations of humanity have involved speed and time. The spatial realm means we can experience for the very first time in human history the potential of simultaneous placement.

Canadian inventor and entrepreneur Paul Duffy takes us on a global tour of possibilities from individual human talents to new products, destination locations and the complex data sets that influence our current decision-making. Everything can be connected and experienced through holographic immersion – and when episodic storytelling is added to the equation, holograms become the new units of human exchange, mediating everything from the customer’s journey to preventive health and lifelong learning. We are on the cusp of a new moonshot in human endeavor, but it has little to do with the virtual metaverse. The real-world spatial realm takes technology back into the space we exist in and reinvents the power of people, products, places and information. As Paul Duffy argues in his first book, “Holograms have been around for seventy years, but now comes the moment of inflection – like when photography became cinema and cinema became the television.” Beyond Augmented Reality lies a spatial realm of possibility that digital transformation itself could only guess at.
